Canada Greener Homes Grant
The Canada Greener Homes Grant program provides grants for Canadians to make energy efficient modernizations more affordable and accessible. There are 4 steps to receiving up to $5,000 as reimbursement for upgrades to your home!
Step 1: Register and book your pre-retrofit evaluation
The first step is to register for the Greener Homes Program through your CRA account. During this you will have to provide information about yourself and your home. Afterwards, you will book a pre-retrofit evaluation with a NRCan Registered Energy Advisor.
Some companies in Winnipeg that have Registered Energy Advisors include:
- Amerispec of Canada
- prairieHOUSE Performance Inc
- Energy Werx Corp1
After that, the advisor will provide you with a report of their recommendations for your home. This report will be available on your CRA Account.
Step 2: Plan, document, and complete your home retrofits
The first step you should take is to determine whether or not your desired modifications are eligible. You can find the list of eligible modifications and equipment here. Once you have chosen the adjustments that you would like to proceed with, you can chose a company and move ahead with the work.
Step 3: Book your post-retrofit evaluation and apply for reimbursement
After all the work is complete, you will need to sign back into the CRA portal to request your post-retrofit evaluation. You will be able to see how much energy you have saved and how much the Advisor recommends that you receive for payment. However, they do have up to 30 days after your final evaluation to submit your paperwork to Natural Resources Canada.
You will need to keep the following documents to ensure that you will be properly reimbursed:
- Receipts for your pre-and post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation
- All receipts and invoices for products purchased and installation costsT
They highly recommend that you also have an attestation form. This form shows that the installation was completed by a trained and licensed professional. You can find these forms here.
Step 4: Receive your Reimbursement
Once the program officers have reviewed your file, you will go into the CRA portal and confirm your grant total. This must be done in order to receive the repayment.
If you have questions or want to challenge the amount you can dispute the claim with the Greener Homes Initiative.
